What it is
ISO 17100:2015 specifies requirements for the core processes, resources and other aspects necessary for the delivery of a quality translation service. It covers translator and reviser competences and qualifications, the mandatory translate-then-revise workflow by a second person, project management, technical resources, and the pre-production agreement with the client. It is a requirements standard for the translation process, not a management-system standard, so certification does not carry an IAF or EGAC symbol.
Who needs it
Translation agencies and language service providers, freelance translator collectives, legal and technical translation offices, localisation providers, and any organisation whose clients — publishers, courts, tender bodies, international companies — ask for evidence that translations are produced under a recognised process.

Common questions
Is ISO 17100 an accredited certification?
No. ISO 17100 is a process requirements standard outside the EGAC/IAF management-system accreditation scope. CAS certifies it under its own responsibility (By CAS); the certificate carries the CAS mark and is verifiable on the CAS register, but not the EGAC or IAF symbols.
Does it cover machine translation?
ISO 17100 explicitly excludes raw machine-translation output and its post-editing. Post-editing of machine translation is covered by the companion standard ISO 18587:2017.
Who has to be qualified?
Translators, revisers and reviewers must meet the standard's competence and qualification requirements (recognised qualification, or documented experience), and the provider must keep records of them.
