Mark & recognition

Issued under CAS's EGAC accreditation (CAB 012418) and internationally recognised through the IAF Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA). The certificate CAS issues bears the EGAC and IAF marks; the certified organisation displays the CAS certification mark (the EGAC/IAF marks are CAS's accreditation marks and are not used by clients).

What it is

ISO 14001:2026 is the fourth edition of the international Environmental Management System standard, published 15 April 2026 by ISO/TC 207 SC 1. It cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its Amendment 1:2024 (climate change). The new edition incorporates the latest ISO Harmonized Structure requirements and provides further clarification on key topics including environmental aspects, compliance obligations, life cycle perspective, and continual improvement. Note: CAS continues to issue EGAC-accredited certificates against ISO 14001:2015 until EGAC re-issues Schedule 012418B for the 2026 edition.

Who needs it

All organisations — regardless of size, type, or sector — that wish to enhance environmental performance, meet compliance obligations, and demonstrate commitment to environmental responsibility. Particularly relevant for manufacturing, construction, mining, chemicals, transport, energy, and any supply chain requiring environmental credentials.

Benefits of certification

  • Latest 4th Edition — fully up to date with ISO Harmonized Structure 2026
  • Replaces ISO 14001:2015 and Amendment 1:2024 in a single updated document
  • Climate change obligations fully integrated (no separate amendment required)
  • Reduced environmental incidents, regulatory penalties, and compliance costs
  • Meets ESG, green procurement, and investor sustainability requirements
  • EGAC accredited with IAF MLA global recognition in 100+ countries
  • Seamlessly integrated with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 as an IMS
  • CAS will be among the first CBs in North Africa & Middle East offering ISO 14001:2026 certification

Audit process

EMS audit time is determined per Global ACI TECH-3-004 Table EMS 1 based on effective personnel and environmental complexity category (High / Medium / Low / Limited). The transition from ISO 14001:2015 follows Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M): new and initial certifications only to ISO 14001:2026 after 31 October 2027, and every certified client's transition, including issue of the ISO 14001:2026 certificate, completed before 30 April 2029.

Transition notes

ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026 and cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 including Amendment 1:2024. Global ACI transition requirements (Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M)) apply: CAS continues to issue EGAC-accredited ISO 14001:2015 certificates until EGAC records its transition decision on CAS, new and initial certifications are issued only to ISO 14001:2026 after 31 October 2027, and every certified client completes the transition, including issue of the ISO 14001:2026 certificate, before 30 April 2029, after which an ISO 14001:2015 certificate is no longer valid whatever expiry date it prints. Existing certificates remain valid until then at the latest, and CAS plans each client's transition on a scheduled surveillance or recertification audit.

The transition dates, explained →

Environmental complexity

Environmental complexity is assessed per Global ACI TECH-3-004 Table EMS 2 — from High (mining, chemicals, oil refining) to Limited (offices, telecoms, business services).

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

What is new in ISO 14001:2026?

ISO 14001:2026 is the Fourth Edition (published April 2026). It cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its Amendment 1:2024. Main changes: (1) Full incorporation of the latest ISO Harmonized Structure (HLS) requirements applicable to all management system standards. (2) Climate change is now fully embedded in §4.1 and §4.2 (previously only in the 2024 Amendment). (3) Clarification of requirements on key topics including environmental aspects (§6.1.2), compliance obligations (§6.1.3), and operational planning (§8.1). (4) New terminology clarifications in Annex A.

Do existing ISO 14001:2015 certificates need to be reissued immediately?

No. ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid until they are transitioned, and at the latest until 30 April 2029, the end of the transition set by Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M); after that date an ISO 14001:2015 certificate is no longer valid whatever expiry date it prints. After 31 October 2027, new and initial certifications are issued only to ISO 14001:2026. CAS will notify all certified clients of their transition schedule and will support them through the transition audit process.

What is environmental complexity and how does it affect audit time?

Global ACI TECH-3-004 classifies organisations into High, Medium, Low, or Limited environmental complexity based on the nature and gravity of their environmental aspects. This directly affects audit time and cost. High complexity (e.g. mining, chemicals) requires more audit days than Limited complexity (e.g. offices, business services).

Can ISO 14001:2026 be certified together with ISO 9001?

Yes. CAS conducts integrated audits per Global ACI TECH-3-008 (formerly IAF MD 11), under which the combined audit time can be reduced by up to 20%, according to how integrated your management system is and how far the audit team can audit the standards together; it can also increase where the integrated audit is more complex. This is an audit-time rule applied to every client, not a discount. ISO 14001:2026 uses the same ISO Harmonized Structure as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, making integration straightforward.

Does ISO 14001:2026 require specific environmental performance targets?

No. The standard requires the organisation to set environmental objectives appropriate to its context, demonstrate continual improvement, and meet its compliance obligations — but it does not prescribe specific performance levels or numerical targets.

What does an ISO 14001 certification audit check?

The audit checks that your environmental management system meets the requirements of ISO 14001:2015, clauses 4 to 10. In practice this covers how you identify environmental aspects and compliance obligations, set environmental objectives, control operations from a life cycle perspective, prepare for emergencies, evaluate compliance and performance, and act on nonconformities. Auditors look for evidence of implementation, not only documents.

Does ISO 14001 certification prove that we comply with environmental law?

Not by itself. ISO 14001 requires the organisation to determine its compliance obligations, evaluate whether they are being fulfilled and act on any gaps. The certification audit checks that these processes exist and work. The certificate confirms conformity with the standard; it is not a permit or a legal ruling from a regulator.

Do we need ISO 9001 before we can get ISO 14001?

No. ISO 14001 is a standalone standard and can be certified on its own. Because it shares the ISO Harmonized Structure with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, it can also be audited alongside them in an integrated audit; in that case you receive separate certificates for each standard.

How long is an ISO 14001 certificate valid?

A CAS ISO 14001 certificate is valid for 3 years. The initial certification is year 1 of the cycle; surveillance audits in years 2 and 3, the first no later than 12 months after the certification decision, verify that the environmental management system continues to meet the requirements of the standard, and a recertification audit before the certificate expires renews it for a new cycle.

Which edition of ISO 14001 does CAS certify to today, 2015 or 2026?

CAS currently certifies to ISO 14001:2015. ISO 14001:2026, the fourth edition, has been published by ISO and cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its Amendment 1:2024. CAS continues to issue EGAC-accredited certificates against ISO 14001:2015 until EGAC records its transition decision on CAS and re-issues Schedule 012418B for the 2026 edition (decision due by 30 April 2027 under Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-04-30 (M)). After 31 October 2027, new and initial certifications are issued only to ISO 14001:2026, and every certified client completes the transition, including issue of the ISO 14001:2026 certificate, before 30 April 2029. All existing certificates remain valid until they are transitioned, and at the latest until 30 April 2029.
