What it is
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an artificial intelligence management system (AIMS) within an organisation. It covers the organisation's policy and objectives for AI, AI risk assessment and treatment, AI system impact assessment, and a reference set of AI controls in its Annex A.
Who needs it
Organisations of any size or sector that develop, provide or use products or services based on AI systems — for example software and technology companies, providers of AI-based services, and organisations that use AI in their own operations.
Audit process
Certification follows a two-stage initial audit (Stage 1 and Stage 2) under ISO/IEC 17021-1:2015, with annual surveillance audits and recertification every three years. The certificate is issued By CAS, outside CAS's EGAC accreditation, and can be verified on CAS CertSearch.

Is ISO/IEC 42001 certification by CAS accredited?
No. CAS issues ISO/IEC 42001 certificates By CAS, under its own authority and outside its EGAC accreditation, which covers ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 22000, 50001 and 22301 only. The certificate carries the CAS mark, not the EGAC or IAF marks, and can be verified on CAS CertSearch.
Does ISO/IEC 42001 certification certify an AI product?
No. ISO/IEC 42001 certification covers the organisation's AI management system within the certified scope. It does not certify any individual AI system, model or product, or its regulatory conformity (for example under the EU AI Act).
