EN ISO 13585:2021 — Brazer and Brazing Operator Qualification

Qualification test certificates for brazers and brazing operators to EN ISO 13585:2021 — one certificate per test piece, printed in English and Italian. Issued By CAS under its own authority, outside the EGAC accredited scope, with no EGAC or IAF mark.

What it is

EN ISO 13585:2021 specifies the qualification testing of brazers, who hold and manipulate the heating device by hand, and of brazing operators, who control or adjust the brazing parameters in mechanized or automatic brazing. It covers the brazing processes listed in its clause 1, with local or global heating — among them flame (torch), induction, resistance, furnace, vacuum, dip-bath and arc weld brazing. A brazer is qualified on the essential variables of the test piece — process, product type, type of joint, parent material group, filler metal classification, filler application, dimensions and flow direction; a brazing operator on the process, the filler application and the type of equipment. It does not apply to personnel who only load or unload the brazing unit or start an automatic cycle, nor to aerospace brazing covered by ISO 11745.

Who needs it

Manufacturers that braze heat exchangers, refrigeration and air-conditioning circuits, plumbing and gas installations, electrical and electronic assemblies, tools and machinery parts, and the brazers and brazing operators they employ.

Qualification test

The test piece is brazed in the presence of an examiner approved by CAS, following a brazing procedure specification (BPS or pBPS). The examiner submits the test record with the reports of the examinations and tests the standard requires for that test piece, which may be carried out by a testing laboratory approved by CAS. CAS reviews the record and the reports, works out the range of qualification from the standard's tables (the examiner may narrow it, never widen it) and issues one certificate for each test piece.

Validity and confirmation

The qualification is valid for 5 years from the date of brazing of the test piece, provided it is confirmed every 6 months that the brazer or brazing operator has worked within the range of qualification. It may be prolonged for further 5-year periods, each starting on the date of prolongation, on the evidence the standard requires (clause 9).

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Is EN ISO 13585 qualification by CAS accredited?

No. CAS issues brazer and brazing operator certificates By CAS, under its own authority and outside its EGAC accreditation, which covers ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, 22000, 50001 and 22301 management-system certification only. They carry no EGAC or IAF mark. Where a regulation, code or contract requires the qualification to be issued by an accredited body or a notified body, a By CAS certificate does not meet that requirement.

Who is a brazer and who is a brazing operator?

A brazer holds and manipulates the heating device by hand, as in torch brazing. A brazing operator controls or adjusts the brazing parameters of mechanized or automatic brazing, such as furnace or induction brazing. The certificate states which of the two the holder is qualified as.

How long is a brazer certificate valid?

Five years from the date of brazing of the test piece, as long as the 6-month confirmations are given. It can then be prolonged for further 5-year periods on the evidence the standard requires.
