NANDO is the European Commission's list of notified bodies. For each body it shows the identification number and the tasks the body was notified for. A number checks out only when four things match the document in front of you: the body, the EU act, the procedure and the product.

NANDO now sits in the Commission's Single Market Compliance Space; the address ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/nando leads there. You can search by country, by legislation, or with a free search on body number, body name, legislation, article or annex, procedure and products.

Results show active notifications by default. The status filter also offers Withdrawn, Suspended, Expired and Expired/Withdrawn; search those if a number is not listed as active.

The fields, and what each confirms

Body number. The number on the certificate. It follows the CE marking where the body is involved in production. A legal entity carries one number, however many acts it is notified for, and numbers are not re-used after a withdrawal. It identifies the body, and nothing more.

Body name, address and country. These must match the issuer printed on the certificate. Certificates are always issued by and in the name of the notified body, so a certificate in the name of an agent or a local partner does not fit.

Body type. "NB" means notified body. NANDO also lists other categories, such as user inspectorates, and keeps bodies designated under mutual recognition agreements in a dedicated part.

Legislation. The list of notifications names each act the body is notified for. The act on the EU declaration of conformity must be on that list.

Product, Procedures, Articles/Annexes. Open the notification for the act. The notified items show the products, the procedures and the annex for each. Under the PPE Regulation, for example, "EU type-examination" appears against "Annex V". The procedure named on the certificate must appear here, for that product.

Notification status. Suspended, withdrawn or expired notifications stay in the database rather than disappearing. Subject to sector rules, a suspension or withdrawal does not affect certificates the body issued up to that point until it is shown that they should be withdrawn. If it is not Active, ask about the certificate first.

Last approval date. Shown for the body and for each notification. The Blue Guide expects each notification to be updated, with information on the continued monitoring of the body's competence, within five years of its initial notification or last update.

PDF. Linked from the list of notifications; the details page notes that some information is in the PDF.

What NANDO does not confirm

The Commission gives the lists for information only, valid at the date indicated. NANDO lists bodies and their notifications, not the certificates they issue. To confirm that a certificate is genuine and current, ask the notified body directly, using the contact details NANDO shows rather than those printed on the document.
