What is Environmental Management Systems?

ISO 14001:2026 is the fourth edition of the international Environmental Management System standard, published 15 April 2026 by ISO/TC 207 SC 1. It cancels and replaces ISO 14001:2015 and its Amendment 1:2024 (climate change). The new edition incorporates the latest ISO Harmonized Structure requirements and provides further clarification on key topics including environmental aspects, compliance obligations, life cycle perspective, and continual improvement. Note: CAS continues to issue EGAC-accredited certificates against ISO 14001:2015 until EGAC re-issues Schedule 012418B for the 2026 edition; the IAF transition deadline is May 2029.

Certification Process
1
Application & Review
Submit your application. CAS reviews your organisation's scope, personnel, sites, and activities to prepare a detailed audit time calculation and formal commercial proposal.
2
Stage 1 — Document Review
On-site or remote review of your management system documentation, readiness assessment, and confirmation of Stage 2 audit scope and plan.
3
Stage 2 — On-site Audit
Full on-site audit of the implemented management system against the standard's requirements. Findings are reported; nonconformities must be closed before certification.
4
Certification Decision
CAS's independent certification committee reviews the audit findings and issues the certificate. The certificate is valid for 3 years.
5
Surveillance & Recertification
Annual surveillance audits (~1/3 of initial audit time) maintain certification. Recertification audit (~2/3 of initial time) is conducted before certificate expiry to renew for a further 3 years.
Audit Time: EMS audit time is determined per IAF MD 5:2023 Table EMS1 based on effective personnel and environmental complexity category (High / Medium / Low / Limited). Transition timelines from ISO 14001:2015 will be confirmed by EGAC and IAF following the new edition publication.

Transition Notice: ISO 14001:2015 certificates issued before the transition deadline remain valid until their expiry date. CAS will support all certified clients through the transition to ISO 14001:2026 when the transition period is formally announced by EGAC and IAF.

No. ISO 14001:2015 certificates issued before the transition deadline remain valid until their expiry date. EGAC and IAF will announce the formal transition timeline. CAS will notify all certified clients of their transition schedule and will support them through the transition audit process.
IAF MD 5:2023 classifies organisations into High, Medium, Low, or Limited environmental complexity based on the nature and gravity of their environmental aspects. This directly affects audit time and cost. High complexity (e.g. mining, chemicals) requires more audit days than Limited complexity (e.g. offices, business services).
Yes. CAS conducts integrated audits per IAF MD 11:2023, which can reduce total audit time by up to 20%. ISO 14001:2026 uses the same ISO Harmonized Structure as ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, making integration straightforward.
No. The standard requires the organisation to set environmental objectives appropriate to its context, demonstrate continual improvement, and meet its compliance obligations — but it does not prescribe specific performance levels or numerical targets.
